BHSU Falls at Home to No. 9 Mines

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team had No. 9 Colorado School of Mines on the ropes for the second consecutive year as they looked to make a statement in the RMAC, however, a 74th minute goal for Orediggers proved to be the difference in a 1-0 decision. After being out-shot in the opening half, the Yellow Jackets flipped the script in the second half and out-shot the Orediggers, but were unable to find the back of the net as they suffered their first setback of the season at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a scoreless first half, Colorado School of Mines was on the attack early, out-shooting the Yellow Jackets 7-2 and saw a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Rian Barthel was able to fend off a pair of shots that were on target by the Oredigger's Kaitlyn Manalili in the 8th and 16th minutes, making a punching save to knock the ball over the goal and hauling in a high-arching shot towards the center of the net.
  • After a quiet first half, the Yellow Jacket offense came to life early in the second half with a pair of shots by Aubri Roth and Ainsley Wilson to go along with a corner kick in the first ten minutes of action. Shortly after the Green & Gold saw their first shot of the match land on target as Peyton Hill found space around the right outside edge of the box and placed the ball towards the top right corner of the net before Allie Lundgren snagged it out of the air for Mines.
  • CSM was able to break the scoreless tie in the 74th minute as Anna Gessner was able to move the ball out of the far corner, where the Yellow Jacket defense was swarming the ball, and found Lindsay Jeans directly in front of the goal where she was able to head the ball into the back of the net off a bounce for the lone goal of the game.
  • The Black Hills State offense continued to pressure the Colorado School of Mines defense in the final 15 minutes of play as they looked for the equalizer, with Ashley Measles, Hill, and Leah Day, all posting shots on target. The Yellow Jackets also received a corner kick opportunity following Day's shot-on-goal in the 89th minute, which saw Roth find an open lane towards the goal, but her header went wide left of the net.
  • Colorado School of Mines held the advantage in shots (12-10), shots-on-goal (5-4), and corner kicks (4-3), while the teams were even with four saves apiece.
