Yellow Jackets Close Opening Weekend of RMAC Play on the Road at Adams State

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team will look to close out the opening weekend of RMAC play on the road this weekend at Adams State on Sunday, September 28. Carrying a program record 3-game win streak into the match, the Yellow Jackets will look to secure their best-ever start in conference play, seeking their first-ever 2-0 start in league play.

BLACK HILLS STATE STORYLINES
  • Black Hills State enters the contest with a record of 4-1-2 (1-0-0 RMAC) following their come from behind 2-1 win at New Mexico Highlands on Friday afternoon for their first win in an RMAC opener since 2023. The four wins broke the school single-season record and marks the best start to a season in program history.
  • BHSU is also in the midst of a 3-game win streak currently, which also marks the longest in program history.
  • The win over Montana State Billings last Saturday helped the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-0 at home for the first time in program history after they defeated Dakota State earlier in the week for their first-ever home opening victory as well.
  • The 2025 season opening weekend was just the second time in program history in which the Green & Gold finished undefeated, drawing at MSU Moorhead (0-0) and defeating Minnesota Crookston (4-1). In 2023 they also went unbeaten on opening weekend, defeating Dakota Wesleyan (6-0) and Mount Marty (5-0).
  • The Yellow Jackets five assists against the Golden Eagles on opening weekend matched the program single game record which was set last fall against New Mexico Highlands.
  • BHSU has scored four goals twice this season, each time with four different players against UMC and MSUB.
  • After being in the hunt to make the conference tournament last season, the Yellow Jackets have been picked to finish 11th in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Through seven games this season Black Hills State has recorded 11 goals, ten assists, 32 points, 131 shots, 49 shots on goal, 40 corner kicks and 24 saves, while on the other hand their opponents have notched three goals, one assist, seven points, 50 shots, 27 shots on goal, 21 corner kicks, and 38 saves.
  • In 2024 the Yellow Jackets broke the school single-season record for points (51), goals (18), and assists (15).
  • This year the BHSU defense has already forced four shutouts, matching the school single-season record, as they have held opponents to just 7.1 shot attempts and 3.9 shots-on-goal per game.
  • Eight different players scored a goal for the Yellow Jackets this season, including Peyton Hill (3), Leh Day (2), Ella Cornelius (1), Ally Boysen (1), Audrey Sillanpaa (1), Whitney Hansen (1), Jayda Hammer (1), and Kayla Truong.
  • Additionally, seven different players have notched an assist this season for the Green & Gold, including Aubri Roth, Cornelius, and Hill who lead the team with two apiece.
  • Hill currently leads the team with eight points on the year by way of her three goals and two assists. She is the only player on the team with both multiple goals and assists this season.
  • Cornelius and Hill each recorded both a goal and an assist against UMC, while Day notched a goal and an assist against DSU. After happening only once prior to head coach John Hutchison's arrival, the match against the Golden Eagles marked the fourth time under his watch that multiple players have recorded both a goal and assist in the same match.
  • Through seven matches, 2024 Honorable Mention All-RMAC selection, Ainsley Wilson leads the team with 621 minutes played on the field, while Bria Sargent has also played 599 minutes on the back line of the defense.
  • Rian Barthel has made four starts in goal, while Karsyn Fraser-Slothower has made three, each playing the entirety of their matches. Barthel has tied the school single-season record of three shutouts on the year, which includes becoming the first freshman to post a shutout in a season opener in program history. She holds a 0.944 save percentage and a 0.25 goals-against average with 17 saves. Fraser-Slothower kept Northwestern Oklahoma State off the scoreboard for the first time this season earlier this year as she has tallied an 0.778 save percentage and a 0.67 goals-against average with seven saves.
  • Barthel currently ranks ninth in NCAA Division II in save percentage, 12th in goals-against average, and 21st in shutouts.
  • 2025 marks the first time in program history that two or more goalkeepers have notched multiple wins in a season.
  • John Hutchison is in his third season as the head coach at Black Hills State, guiding the Yellow Jackets to a record of 10-24-8. Overall, 2025 is his seventh season as a collegiate women's soccer head coach with a career mark of 21-67-16 after spending four prior seasons at Presentation College.
ADAMS STATE STORYLINES
  • Adams State fell to a record of 4-2-1 (0-1-0 RMAC) as they saw a 3-game win streak snapped in their RMAC opener on Friday afternoon, falling to (RV) Regis by a score of 3-1.
  • The four wins for ASU mark the most in a season since 2022.
  • The three goals were the most allowed this season by the Grizzlies, and it marked just the second game this season surrendering a goal.
  • After going 3-12-2 (1-10-1 RMAC) to finish 12th in the conference in 2024, the Grizzlies were picked to finish 12th in the league's preseason coaches' poll.
  • Through seven games Adams State has recorded 13 goals, 13 assists, 39 points, 116 shots, 56 shots-on-goal, 28 corner kicks, and 18 saves, while on the other hand their opponents have notched four goals, one assist, nine points, 44 shots, 22 shots-on-goal, 17 corner kicks, and 43 saves.
  • Fatso Williams leads the team with five goals on the season and is tied for the lead in NCAA Division II with three game-winners.
  • A trio of Grizzlies, Grace Abbott, Keira Robertson, and Colette Tena, are all tied for the team lead with two assists this season.
  • Williams leads the team with 11 total points by way of her five goals and one assist, while Abbott is the only player with multiple goals (4) and assists (2) to rank second on the roster with ten points.
  • The primary goalkeeper for the Grizzlies is Ashlyn Bartley, who has started all seven matches this season. She leads the team with 17 saves, recording an 0.810 save percentage and a 0.59 goals-against average. She currently ranks seventh in NCAA Division II in goals-against average and is eighth nationally with four shutouts.
  • Alex Greco is in his fourth season as head coach at Adams State, guiding the Grizzlies to a record of 21-42-12 during his tenure. Additionally, this year marks his fifth season overall as a collegiate women's soccer head coach, as one prior season as the head coach at Lynn brings his career record to 14-34-9 overall.

  • Sunday will mark the ninth all time meeting on the soccer pitch for Black Hills State and Adams State, with the Grizzlies holding the 4-2-2 advantage in the series.
