Yellow Jackets Look to Bounce Back While Hosting CSU Pueblo

SPEARFISH, S.D. – After falling at home for the first time this season in a tight battle with nationally-ranked Colorado School of Mines on Friday afternoon, the Black Hills State University women’s soccer team looks to bounce back and snap a 2-game losing streak as they host CSU Pueblo on Sunday morning at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex. The Yellow Jackets, who picked up points on the opening weekend of league play, will look to keep pace with the upper portion of the league standings, while the ThunderWolves are still in search of their first conference win of the year.

  • Black Hills State enters the contest with a record of 4-3-2 (1-2-0 RMAC), as they have now dropped two in a row after a 1-0 loss to No. 9 Colorado School of Mines in what was their first home loss of the season.
  • Last Friday the Yellow Jackets come from behind 2-1 win at New Mexico Highlands marked their first win in an RMAC opener since 2023. The fourth win on the year also broke the school single-season record and notched the best start to a season in program history. The win marked the final of a 3-game win streak, which marked the longest in program history.
  • With wins over Dakota State (4-0) and Montana State Billings (1-0), the Green & Gold improved to 2-0 at home for the first time in program history. The win over the DSU notched the first-ever home opening victory in program history, and the win over MSUB marked the first-ever win over the Yellowjackets in six tries.
  • The opening weekend of the 2025 season was just the second time in program history in which the Green & Gold finished undefeated in the opening week of play, drawing at MSU Moorhead (0-0) and defeating Minnesota Crookston (4-1). In 2023 they also went unbeaten on opening weekend, defeating Dakota Wesleyan (6-0) and Mount Marty (5-0). 
  • The Yellow Jackets five assists against the Golden Eagles on opening weekend matched the program single game record which was set last fall against New Mexico Highlands.
  • BHSU has scored four goals twice this season, each time with four different players against UMC and DSU.
  • After being in the hunt to make the conference tournament last season, the Yellow Jackets have been picked to finish 11th in the RMAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
  • Through nine games this season Black Hills State has recorded 12 goals, ten assists, 34 points, 145 shots, 55 shots on goal, 48 corner kicks and 31 saves, while on the other hand their opponents have notched six goals, six assists, 18 points, 74 shots, 37 shots on goal, 29 corner kicks, and 43 saves.
  • BHSU entered this weekend’s games currently leading the RMAC in corner kicks per game (5.63) and shots per game (16.88).
  • In 2024 the Yellow Jackets broke the school single-season record for points (51), goals (18), and assists (15).
  • This year the BHSU defense has already forced four shutouts, matching the school single-season record, as they have held opponents to just 8.2 shot attempts and 4.1 shots-on-goal per game.
  • Eight different players scored a goal for the Yellow Jackets this season, including Peyton Hill (4), Leah Day (2), Ella Cornelius (1), Ally Boysen (1), Audrey Sillanpaa (1), Whitney Hansen (1), Jayda Hammer (1), and Kayla Truong (1).
  • Additionally, seven different players have notched an assist this season for the Green & Gold, including Aubri Roth, Cornelius, and Hill who lead the team with two apiece.
  • Hill currently leads the team with ten points on the year by way of her four goals and two assists. She is the only player on the team with both multiple goals and assists this season.
  • Cornelius and Hill each recorded both a goal and an assist against UMC, while Day notched a goal and an assist against DSU. After happening only once prior to head coach John Hutchison’s arrival, the match against the Golden Eagles marked the fourth time under his watch that multiple players have recorded both a goal and assist in the same match.
  • Through nine matches, 2024 Honorable Mention All-RMAC selection, Ainsley Wilson leads the team with 801 minutes played on the field, while Bria Sargent has also played 779 minutes on the back line of the defense.
  • Rian Barthel has made six starts in goal, while Karsyn Fraser-Slothower has made three, each playing the entirety of their matches. Barthel has tied the school single-season record of three shutouts on the year, which includes becoming the first freshman to post a shutout in a season opener in program history. She holds a 0.857 save percentage and a 0.67 goals-against average with 24 saves. Fraser-Slothower kept Northwestern Oklahoma State off the scoreboard for the first time this season earlier this year as she has tallied an 0.778 save percentage and a 0.67 goals-against average with seven saves.
  • 2025 marks the first time in program history that two or more goalkeepers have notched multiple wins in a season.
  • John Hutchison is in his third season as the head coach at Black Hills State, guiding the Yellow Jackets to a record of 10-26-8. Overall, 2025 is his seventh season as a collegiate women’s soccer head coach with a career mark of 21-69-16 after spending four prior seasons at Presentation College.
  • CSU Pueblo enters their final game of the weekend with a record of 1-4-3 (0-1-1 RMAC) after a 2-1 loss at (RV) Regis on Thursday night.
  • The ThunderWolves lone win of the season came nearly a month ago on September 6 when they picked up a 2-0 victory at Sul Ross State on opening weekend.
  • After going 4-10-4 (3-7-2 RMAC) and finish tenth in the conference standings, they have been picked to finish ninth in the coaches’ preseason poll.
  • Through eight games CSUP has recorded 6 goals, 3 assists, 15 points, 67 shots, 29 shots-on-goal, 15 corner kicks, and 34 saves, while on the other hand their opponents have notched 14 goals, nine assist, 37 points, 111 shots, 48 shots-on-goal, 59 corner kicks, and 23 saves.
  • Abby Menk has led the ThunderWolves offense thus far in 2025, finding the back of the net twice for a team-high of four points, including notching one game-winning goal at SRSU.
  • Three different players have tallied an assist for CSUP, including Maya Bethelmie, Mackenzie Fryxell, and Katie Peterson, all with one.
  • Defenders Fryxell, and Samara Sanders lead the back line in minutes played with 694 and 594 respectively. They have helped the defense post three shutouts on the year.
  • Miya Begay and Alva Hellenius have split time in goal this season, each recording one solo shutout, while they also have one combined shutout to their credit too. Begay has recorded a 0.737 save percentage, a 1.55 goals-against average, and has made 14 saves. Hellenius currently holds a 0.679 save percentage, a 1.89 goals-against average, and has made 19 saves.
  • John Constable is in his second season as the head coach at CSU Pueblo, guiding the ThunderWolves to a record of 5-14-7 in his tenure. Additionally, it is his 15th season overall as a college women’s soccer head coach, holding a 121-109-34 record after other previous stops at Converse, Jacksonville, and Nova Southeastern.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Sunday marks the ninth all-time meeting on the pitch between Black Hills State and CSU Pueblo, with the ThunderWolves leading the all-time series 8-0.
  • CSUP notched their third consecutive shutout in the series last year, as they went on to win 3-0 in Pueblo, Colorado, on October 20, 2024.
