BLACK HILLS STATE STORYLINES
  • The Yellow Jackets enter the 2025-26 season feeling good after they broke the 54-hole program record at the RMAC Championship last spring. They shot 1020 (+156) over the three-day tournament. Since then, the Yellow Jackets got younger, adding three new Freshman in Abbi Beld, Shelbi Gardner, and Savannah Peterson, while bringing back familiar faces in Katie Jorgenson, Makaela Swanson, Ava Kalanek, Leyni Stavola, and Olivia McCandless.
  • The Jackets begin their season at a tournament that has brought a lot of success: The Swan Memorial. Last season alone, the BHSU Yellow Jackets set numerous records at this tournament, including the 36-hole program record, which BHSU set with a 653 (+77). They also had Katie Jorgenson jump into the top ten of individual 36-hole round with a 160 (+16). On the 18-hole side, BHSU's first and second round last year broke the top ten in total rounds with a team score of 326 and 327. Makaela Swanson shot a 78 last year in round one of the tournament, which moved her into the top 10 as well. Overall, it was an incredible tournament.
  • BHSU has a lot of experience with this course considering Jorgenson and Kalanek have played at the Broadlands every year of their career, Swanson played at it last year and freshman Abbi Beld won state at it in high school, so there is a lot of familiarity with this course.
  • BHSU was picked to finish 10th in the RMAC in the RMAC Women's Golf Preseason Coaches' Poll finishing ahead of Adams State and just behind rivals Chadron State and South Dakota Mines.
  • Katie Jorgenson is entering the year after another standout season as a Yellow Jacket. She was the first Jacket to have four top 10s in a season since 2018-19. She averaged 83.3 strokes per round last season and had multiple top ten program finishes with the 160 (+16) at this tournament last year placing her T9 among 36-hole rounds, a 76 at the DWU Invitational in round one which was a top 5 round in Yellow Jackets D2 history, and she shot a 252 (+36) at the RMAC Championships, which puts her in the top 5 again for 54-hole score in BHSU's D2 history. She earned an RMAC Player of the Week last year for her performance in this tournament. She will look to continue building on her year last season.
  • Abbi Beld will be making her green and gold debut at the Swan Memorial after having an impressive qualifying. She had an incredibly successful high school career in Colorado that included two top ten finishes at state championships, two all-state teams, and two all-conference teams. She finished fifth in the highest level of the state in her senior year at the state championships. Expect her to make a big impact as a freshman.
  • Shelbi Gardner will also be making her BHSU debut. The freshman from the same high school as Jorgenson, Sheridan High School, had a very impressive prep career that included three all-state selections, three all-conference honors, and two WHSAA 4A State Championships. She was the best prep golfer in Wyoming and competed at the Girls Junior Americas Cup for Team Wyoming. She will now look to bring that success to Spearfish.
  • Makaela Swanson is coming off one of the most impressive freshman years in BHSU history. Her 85.5 stroke average was the lowest by a BHSU freshman in the RMAC era. She had a top 10 program round with her 78 at the Swan Memorial. She has another 79 at the Yellowjacket Fall Invitational and her 54-hole score of 248 (+32) ranks third in the program's D2 history. She was the only player on the team last year to break 80 in a round at the RMAC Championship when she had a 79 (+7) in round two.
  • Ava Kalanek is still the 18-hole record holder from when she shot 73 (+1) at the Swan Memorial in her Freshman year. She averaged 87.3 strokes per round last year. She shot 164 (+20) at the Yellowjacket Fall Invitational last season, which was her career-low 36-hole score.
  • Leyni Stavola will try to build off a strong freshman year campaign. She averaged 88.2 last season and shot her career-low 36-hole score at the Swan Memorial with a 166 (+22). She matched that career low at DWU Invitational where she shot a low 18-hole round score of 79 (+7).
  • Randy Doran is now in his second season as head coach at BHSU and is looking to continue breaking records and setting new lows.
