SPEARFISH, S.D.- Black Hills State University women's golf will now begin their 2026 season with a healthy dose of new players and an almost brand new team as they will head to Sheridan, Wyoming to play in the South Dakota Mines' hosted Travis Roy Memorial Invite at the Powderhorn Golf Resort. Black Hills State is part of the list of 12 teams who will be competing alongside five other RMAC schools.

BLACK HILLS STATE STORYLINES

• Black Hills State is entering this season fresh off another ninth place finish in the RMAC Championships. BHSU shot an 831 (+111) over 45 holes in Las Vegas as they were able to make up over 50 strokes on the eighth and seventh place teams from the year prior. They are continuing to close the gap on the RMAC field and with a young team this year, they will look to continue that.
• Black Hills State is heading to a course they know well. The Jackets played this course last season in the same tournament and shot a 685 (+109) over the 36 holes last year. They finished in 11 place last year in this tournament, and will now be adding an extra 18 holes with this tournament expanding to three days. Shelbi Gardner is the current club champion at The Powderhorn and has been playing on this course since she was three years old, so she has a lot of important experience in to how this course plays, especially in a tournament format.
• The Yellow Jackets were projected to finish ninth this year in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll receiving 18 points. They are currently ahead of Adams State and just behind the tie of South Dakota Mines and Fort Lewis.
• BHSU has a very new team this year. Outside of Shelbi Gardner, no other player on the roster competed at the RMACs last year. Ava Kalanek is the only other veteran on the team, but only played in two rounds last year, so this team will be a lot of new faces with one transfer and three freshman all getting significant playing time this 2026-27 season.
• Gardner will be the leader for the Yellow Jackets this season and will be teeing off as the #1 entering this season. She had the single best freshman season of all time this past year. Her 83.4 scoring average was the sixth lowest in BHSU D2 history. It is also the lowest by a freshman in BHSU single season history. She is only the third golfer since BHSU joined D2 to play more than 15 rounds and finish with a scoring average under 84. She joins Amanda Johnson and Katie Jorgenson in that group. At the Swan Memorial last year, she put up a 77, which is a BHSU top ten for 18-hole score. She then added an 82 for a 159, which is a BHSU top-ten for 36-hole score. She had four top 30s and two top 20s last year. In Sheridan last year, she shot a 165 (+21) to finish in 35^th place. That included a 79 on day one.
• Cheyenne Shade, a junior college transfer from Central Wyoming, is one of the new faces on this roster. She had some high finishes in her time at Central Wyoming, placing second in their home tournament as a freshman, second in the Otero College Invitational, second in the Eastern Wyoming Invite, third in the Northeastern JC Invite, fourth in the fall Eastern Wyoming invite, and seventh in the NJC Fall Region Invite. In this past year, she finished third in her home tournament, fifth in the NJC Women Invite, and fifth in the fall Eastern Wyoming invite. She is a former Wyoming state champion.
• Ava Kalanek is the only other returner for BHSU. She is coming off a year, where she only played two rounds and that was at the Swan Memorial, where she shot a 163 (+19). Kalanek in the prior year played in 15 rounds and had an 87.1 average score. She still holds the BHSU D2 record for single-round score with a 73 at the Swan Memorial in 2023, and the 54-hole score with a 243 at the same tournament where she went 73, 86, 84 over the three days.
• Then we get into the freshman, Megan Robb is in the four spot. Robb is coming off a top five performance in the 2025 Class B Girls State Tournament in North Dakota and as captain, leading her team to her second state championship in six years on the team. Robb earned fourth place after shooting a 79 (+7) on the first day and a 75 (+3) on the second day, which put her just one shot shy of a tie for second. She was Region Champ, All-Region, Regional Senior Athlete of the Year, Class B Senior Athlete of the Year, and All-State in her senior year that included five separate individual wins. 
• Madison Brown, the first member of the 2026 signing class is up next. Brown took home the Wyoming state championship last year. She shot 80 and 79 over the two rounds to capture the title. The 79 was the only sub-80 round by any player in the tournament and it helped lead Evanston and Head Coach Jerry Carroll to their second straight state championship. She finished sixth at the Class 4A State Championship in her junior year. Being the captain of each of those state champion teams, Brown earned All-State and All-Conference honors in each of the two years. 
• Reagan Hatling will make her BHSU debut this weekend as well. Hatling enters BHSU after spending six years on the golf team at Belle Fourche. She earned a letter in all six years, and was a captain of head coach Damon Lange's team for two. She qualified for state all four years of high school. Her senior year was her best year to this date as she earned All-Conference honors for the first time this past season. She turned that into her best finish at state finishing in a tie for 36 with a 176.
• Randy Doran is entering his fourth season for the Yellow Jackets. In the D2 era, his players currently hold five top-ten marks in 18-hole score, two in 36-hole score, and six in 54-hole score. His teams have nine top-ten marks in 18-hole score, the top five 36-hole scores, and four of the top ten 54-hole scores. His team continues to improve and inch closer to the RMAC pack.
