The Yellow Jackets were unable to get things going early in the match, with team hitting percentages of .029 and .038 in the first two sets respectively. Sophomore outside hitter Caitlin Templeton was the only hitter to eclipse .200 from the front row. Templeton tallied a .308 hitting percentage with 11 kills and three errors on 26 attempts. Templeton also added five assisted blocks and two digs.
Freshman libero Kelsey Olson was the defensive presence for the Yellow Jackets. Olson led the match in digs with 13. Olson also added an assist and a service ace. The Yellow Jackets led their opponent in both digs and blocks defensively with 44 total digs and eight blocks on the evening.
"We were not mentally ready tonight," said Head Coach Sally Nichols about the loss. "We came out flat and dug ourselves a hole early in the match that we couldn't overcome. If we are going to have a shot at moving into the semi-finals we need to come out ready to play tomorrow."
The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. CT against the University of Sioux Falls. This will be the third meeting between Black Hills State and the Cougars this season. The two teams split their first two contests this season.
