COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team saw their 2-game win streak snapped on Friday afternoon at the hands of UCCS in a 4-1 defeat at Mountain Lion Stadium. Despite early shot attempts in both the first and second halves for the Yellow Jackets, they were unable to maintain a constant offensive threat as the Mountain Lions held the 22-12 advantage in shots, leading to a pair of goals in each half for the home team. HOW IT HAPPENED
- The lone shot of the first half for Black Hills State occurred 44 seconds into the contest when Katy Vinton attempted to find room around the outside corner, but had her shot deflected by a pair of UCCS defenders.
- The UCCS offense got out to a quick start to the contest, posting five shots with one on target, and a trio of corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of action, leading up to their first goal in the 20th minute by Fie Steenberg as she collected a pass from Jessica Rockwell that was sent into the box and then proceeded to find an opening to fire a shot from five yards out into the back right corner of the net.
- The Mountain Lion offense remained on the attack, finding the back of the net once again in the 33rd minute when Rockwell sent a pass into the box and found Amelia McManus who headed the ball into the left corner of the goal from five yards out, giving UCCS a 2-0 advantage. The Mountain Lions entered the halftime break with a 12-1 advantage in shot attempts.
- The second half once again started with another quick shot attempt by the Yellow Jackets as Rylee Barnes tallied the first shot attempt on target for BHSU in the 46th minute, firing the ball from 20 yards out on the left side of the field before it was corralled by Alexa Malaspina in goal for UCCS.
- In just over five minutes of playing time, the Mountain Lions doubled their lead as Luka Johnson found a path through the defense as she dribbled the ball in for a shot from just a couple yards out and into the back right corner of the net for a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute. Then in the 54th minute, Emily Aguilar found the ball off a deflection by Makayla Dannelly in goal and then proceeded to sneak the ball inside the right post for a 4-0 advantage.
- Black Hills State notched their lone goal of the match in the 58th minute as Vinton corralled the ball off a deflection by Malaspina that allowed her to the put the ball into the center of the net from just a couple yards in front of the goal to cut the deficit to 4-1.
- While the Yellow Jackets were unable to find the back of the net again, they posted seven shot attempts with four on target while UCCS recorded six shots with four on target in the final 30 minutes of action.
- UCCS held the advantage in shots (22-12), shots on goal (11-6), and corner kicks (8-1), while Black Hills State held the edge in saves (7-5).Â
