HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half only saw three shots land on target, all of which were by Colorado Mesa. Makayla Dannelly notched saves in the 11th minute and the 44th minute, however the Mavericks were able to get on the board in the 32nd minute when Carli Dare passed the ball off to Abby Fotheringham, who then fired a shot into the top left corner from the right side of the box.
- After Black Hills State was called for a handball in the box, CMU received a penalty kick in the 44th minute, however the Yellow Jackets caught a break when Mira Houck's shot attempt went wide left of the goal and the teams entered the halftime break with Colorado Mesa only leading by one (1-0).
- Dannelly kept BHSU within striking distance in the second half, as she made three saves in the span of just two and a half minutes of game time in the early stages of the period.
- Anacel Valenzuela-Acosta tallied the first shot on goal of the game for Black Hills State, when she placed a shot towards the bottom right corner of the net in the 63rd minute from an open gap on the top right corner of the box, however Keely Wieczorek jumped in front of it for the save.
- Before leaving the contest following a collision on a shot and save, Dannelly made a pair of saves in the 74th and 77th minutes as she continued to stifle the Maverick attack in the second half.
- Entering for the final 13 minutes and change, Allanah Facio made her lone save of the match-up in the 79th minute as she deflected away a free kick by Sarah Dunn. Colorado Mesa, however, extended their lead with a goal by Adessa Correa as she found the back right corner of the net following a pass from Dare that led her into a breakaway situation.
- BHSU notched their final shot on target when Paige Hill placed a low, bouncing shot towards the bottom right corner of the net in the 90th minute, but Wieczorek secured the save and the shutout win for CMU.
- Colorado Mesa held the advantage in shots (23-5), shots on goal (10-2), and corner kicks (6-0) while Black Hills State held the edge in saves (8-2).Â
