Yellow Jackets Look to Close 2024 on a High Note Against Regis

SPEARFISH, S.D. – While Wednesday night may mark the final match of the 2024 season for the Black Hills State University women's soccer team, there remains a number of program benchmarks that the Yellow Jackets can cross off as they host Regis. At the top of the list of school records that BHSU looks to hit in the 5 p.m. contest against the Rangers at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex include the most wins overall and in conference play.

BLACK HILLS STATE STORYLINES
  • Black Hills State enters the regular season finale with a record of 3-10-4 (3-7-1 RMAC) following a home loss to Westminster (5-1) on Friday evening. A win over Regis will give the Yellow Jackets four wins overall and in conference play for the first time in program history.
  • BHSU enters the final regular season game 11th in the conference standings with ten points. With a win and losses by Western Colorado and CSU Pueblo, the Green & Gold can clinch a ninth place finish with 13 points, the best RMAC finish in program history.
  • During the 2024 season BHSU has recorded 18 goals, 15 assists, 167 shots, 75 shots on goal, 28 corner kicks, and 105 saves. On the other hand, their opponents have notched 43 goals, 30 assists, 304 shots, 148 shots on goal, 101 corner kicks, and 57 saves.
  • The Yellow Jackets have broken the school single-season record for points (51), goals (18), and assists (15).
  • The Yellow Jackets currently rank second in the RMAC and are 41st in NCAA Division II in saves per game (6.24).
  • Leading the Black Hills State offensive attack is Anacel Valenzuela-Acosta, who has tied the program record for both single-season goals (5) and assists (3), totaling a school record 13 points this season. Other players to watch include Paige Hill with four goals and three assists for 11 points, and Katy Vinton with three goals and assists for nine points.
  • Valenzuela-Acosta currently ranks fifth in the RMAC in total points and goals.
  • Spearheaded by Allie Brown who has played in 72 matches while making 63 starts during her career, the Black Hills State back line has recorded three shutouts this season against Carroll, Minnesota Crookston, and New Mexico Highlands. The trio of clean sheets is the second most in a single season in program history and is only one shy of the school record mark of four set in 2023.
  • While Brown has played a team-leading 1,518 minutes of action this year, other notable defenders include Ainsley Wilson and Bria Sargent who have recorded 1,463 and 866 minutes of playing time respectively thus far in 2024.
  • Makayla Dannelly has been the primary goalkeeper this season for BHSU, playing and starting in 13 contests where she has made 85 saves for a .726 save percentage and a 2.57 goals against average. She has posted one shutout during the season, holding Carroll scoreless in the season opener. Dannelly ranks second in the RMAC in saves per game (6.54) and third in total saves, while also ranking 29th and 36th nationally in the categories respectively.
  • Other goalkeepers that have played in reserve include Allanah Facio who has played in five matches and made two starts where she has recorded eight saves and has been a part of two combined shutouts, while Zoe Wiggall has played in three matches and made two starts where she notched ten saves and was a part of one combined shutout.
  • John Hutchison is in his second season as the head coach of the Yellow Jackets. 
REGIS STORYLINES
  • Regis enters this the regular season finale with a record of 5-9-3 (4-5-2 RMAC) following a home loss to No. 18 Colorado Mesa (2-0) on Sunday afternoon.
  • The Rangers enter their final match of the regular season holding down the eighth and final spot for the conference tournament with 14 points, however they have not clinched a bid to the postseason yet.
  • During the 2024 season RU has recorded 21 goals, 13 assists, 184 shots, 86 shots on goal, 60 corner kicks, and 84 saves. On the other hand, their opponents have notched 27 goals, 20 assists, 231 shots, 111 shots on goal, 62 corner kicks, and 65 saves.
  • Madeline Gardner and Natalie Bunch lead the offensive attack for Regis with 13 and 11 points respectively. Gardner has tallied her points by way of six goals and one assist, while Bunch has notched five goals and one assist.
  • Madison Cullinan spearheads the back line of the Ranger defense with a team-high of 1,525 minutes played while also collecting one goal on the year. An additional defender of note includes Rachel Day who has totaled 899 minutes this season.
  • The primary goalkeeper for RU this year has been Grace Glover who has played and started in 13 matches as she has made 57 saves with a .838 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average. She has posted four shutouts this season against Angelo State, Colorado Christian, Westminster, and CSU Pueblo.
  • Jeff Frykholm is in his third season as the head coach at Regis.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday will mark the tenth all-time meeting on the pitch between Black Hills State and Regis, with the Rangers leading the series 9-0.
  • RU secured the win in the last meeting between the teams with a 5-1 victory on November 1, 2023, in Denver, Colorado.
