HOW IT HAPPENED
- Black Hills State looked to have an early scoring opportunity in the opening minute as Aubree Orosco came out of the box to play the ball to her defenders, however, Jayda Hammer deflected the pass and looked to have an open net in front of her, but Karly Morkunas was able to clear the ball before she caught up to it.
- The Yellow Jackets were able to place one shot on target with Orosco in goal, that occurred in the 7th minute as Hammer placed a header towards the center of the net on a pass from Kylie Hayes. The Mountaineers then made a change in goal to Ashlyn Fitzpatrick as Orosco left with an injury.
- In her eighth start of the season, Rian Barthel made a total of four first half saves, while her offense added four more shots on frame of their own in the final 25 minutes of the opening half. The Green & Gold saw a flurry of three shots on frame in less than a minute and a half as Peyton Hill saw Fitzpatrick charge forward and make a save on a shot from the top of the box in the 21st minute, Hayes fired a shot from 25-yards out towards the bottom-left corner that was knocked away in the 22nd minute, and then Hill added a slow rolling shot from straightway 30-yards out in the 23rd minute.
- The Yellow Jackets saw a 14-2 advantage in shot attempts and 6-2 advantage in shots on goal in the second half. The offensive attack for BHSU saw their best scoring opportunity of the final 45 minutes occur in the 63rd minute as Hill took a throw in from Bailey Smith and placed a shot towards the bottom-left corner, then after a diving save by Fitzpatrick, Kayla Truong grabbed the ball of the ricochet but saw her shot attempt unable to cross the goal line and cleared by a Mountaineer defender.
- Barthel secured her school-record fourth shutout of the year as she made her final two saves of the match in the 85th and 90th minutes.
- Black Hills State held the advantage in shots (24-7) and shots on goal (11-6), while Western Colorado held the edge in saves (11-6). The teams were even with three corner kicks apiece.
