Don began his coaching career before graduating from BHTC in 1952 as assistant football coach under John Ratigan. After graduation, he accepted the position of head junior high football and basketball coach at Newcastle, Wyoming. A thirty-five year coaching career in Rapid City began in 1953 when he accepted a coaching position at Cathedral High School. From 1956-1959, Weiland was head coach for junior high teams at Coolidge Junior High School. During his tenure at Coolidge, his football teams never lost a game and he suffered only one defeat as coach of the basketball team. In addition to coaching, he spent 30 years as a referee for both high school and college athletics. In 1976 he was honored by the South Dakota High School Athletic Association for 25 years of service. The following year he received the Educator of the Year award from BHSC, and in 1979 he gained membership in the Coaches’ Victory Club.
