began his coaching career in Vale, South Dakota as Jim Norton’s assistant in 1935. Two years later, he moved east to Gettysburg and then on to Aberdeen. He became the head football coach in 1942, winning the mythical state championships in ’42, ’43, ’44 and ’53. He became the head basketball coach in 1944 and won the state championship in ’44 and ’53. His team won several ESD conference championships and appeared in numerous state tournaments.
